Aggregate Field Testing Technician

Course: Aggregate Field Testing Technician
Objective: To ensure that all tests used for materials acceptance are completed in accordance with approved AASHTO methods or alternate procedures as indicated.
Course Content: This course is offered in two one-day modules. The first module includes test methods that satisfy FDOT's minimum requirements for qualification as Aggregate Field Testing Technician. The second module includes the additional test methods required for certification as ACI Aggregate Field Testing Technician.

Day One Module:
  • Sampling of Aggregates (AASHTO T-2)
  • Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size (AASHTO T248)
  • Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregate (AASHTO T-27)
  • Materials Finer than 75 micrometers (No. 200) Sieve (AASHTO T-11)
  • Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregates in Concrete (AASHTO T-21)
Day Two Module:
  • Dry Preparation of Disturbed Soil and Aggregate Samples for Test (AASHTO T-87)
  • Total Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying (AASHTO T-255)
  • Determining the Liquid Limit of Soils (AASHTO T-89)
  • Determining the Plastic Limit and Plasticity Index of Soils (AASHTO T-90)
  • Test Methods for Flat or Elongated Particles in Coarse Aggregate (ASTM D-4791)
  • Clay Lumps and Friable Particles in Aggregate (AASHTO T-112)
Duration of Class: Two or three days. Trainees registered for the "Day One" module will take the examinations on the second day. Trainees registered for the full course will take the examination on the third day.

Examinations:

Written
Required. This course uses the ACI standard certification examination. Open book, 1.5 hours.

Proficiency
Required. Each trainee will be expected to correctly demonstrate skills in conducting the applicable test methods. Each trainee will be given two chances to pass each test. Two failures in one area will constitute failure of the proficiency examination.
